Super Bowl LVII Cactus

The Arizona Super Bowl Committee wanted to create a memorable experience for Super Bowl 57 that paid homage to Arizona, and nothing screamed “AZ” more than a saguaro cactus, so our team at Spectacle designed, fabricated, and installed a hard-to-miss 44 ft. tall steel cactus at Hance Park, where a DJ was situated at the top to play music throughout the Super Bowl event. Media attention came quickly and a call to nickname the giant cactus was briefly sent out. Many flocked around the build to snap a picture with what eventually became dubbed as “Super Spike” and it unsurprisingly became a big attraction during Super Bowl festivities. At night, the cacti comes alive for an interactive LED light show, flashing to the rhythm of the music next to the performance stage. The stats come in at an impressive:

  • 2,500 man hours

  • 23,000 lbs. of steel

  • 29 ft. wingspan

  • 22,000 programmable LED lights

  • Overall 40,000 lbs net weight
